What Problems Do Misaligned Teeth Cause?

Orthodontic Treatment Process

When you do, Dr. Todd will first examine your teeth to determine the extent of the misalignment and the appropriate orthodontic measures that need to be taken. If, for example, the misalignment is mild, Dr. Todd may prescribe the use of a retainer, removable orthodontic appliances composed of an acrylic base, and rigid wires that exert pressure on the teeth. Retainers have to be worn regularly and removed when being cleaned and when going to sleep.
However, if the misalignment is significantly severe, braces would need to be attached. Braces consist of brackets attached to each tooth and an archwire that goes through them, exerting force to move the misaligned teeth to their proper positions. Braces could be made of metal or ceramic, depending on your needs, preferences, and lifestyle.
When Would a Child Be Ready for Braces?
The best time to place braces on your child is between ages 8 and 14 when the facial bones are still growing. Placing braces within this age window takes advantage of growth modification, moving the teeth just as the oral structures grow and solidify into maturity.
